Next weekend I plan to participate in Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-Thon (or what I lovingly refer to as the Reading Madness) from 7:00 a.m. Saturday to 7:00 a.m. Sunday. There are 293 bookworms registered so far who will be reading from across the nation.
This isn’t my first Reading Madness rodeo—oh no, I’ve actually done this once before, back in April of 2009. And I enjoyed every sleep-deprived minute of it!
Lately, I haven’t had as much time to read as I would like, so I’m getting rather giddy for a whole day dedicated to it. Here’s my prep plan to date . . .
I currently have several books started that I doubt I’ll finish before next weekend. My goal is to wrap up these reads and perhaps dive into a few more:
- Creative Prayer: Speaking the Language of God’s Heart, Chris Tiegreen (nf)—110 pages left
- Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, (nf)—80 pages left
- Cold Tangerines: Celebrating the Extraordinary Nature of Everyday Life, Shauna Niequist (nf)
- Havah: The Story of Eve, (f)
- Sarah’s Key, Tatiana de Rosnay (f)
For some reason, I just cannot imagine the read-a-thon working apart from some interesting snacks. What does one have on hand for such an occasion? I’ll have my favorite coffee (almond amaretto from Fresh Market); my favorite popcorn (Orville’s Natural Lime + Salt); and maybe even my favorite indulgence (Swiss Cake rolls).
What are your favorite reading snacks?
Most of my reading will take place in my own home, either in my comfy reading chair (during the day, when I won’t fall asleep) or in my office (during the night, where I won’t fall asleep—I hope!), where I can go online for the challenges and updates.
Want to Join In?
If you plan to do any amount of reading at all over the weekend, why don’t you join the fun? Many participants are unable to read for 24-hours straight, so don’t feel pressure to stay up all night. I’m shooting for a bit of reading every hour, but I will break to hear Sara Groves in concert.
Whatever reading you can muster, there are prizes and interesting challenges to participate in. Stop by next weekend to check it out.
