Day 7, Chapter 7
Intensity is building with each day’s reading. Here in John 7, Jesus is questioned again and again by the Jewish leaders. And it says that He “cried out” (vv. 28, 37) to the crowds with passion, calling them to believe in Him as Messiah. Only the Messiah could claim this:
Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive. (John 7:37–39, ESV)
What an offer! If you are thirsty, go to Jesus and drink. He will give you His Spirit, who will become within your heart rivers of living water. I loved this from The IVP New Testament Commentary Series:
“This invitation to come and drink is the climax of a series of references to water in this Gospel: the water turned to wine (chap. 2), the water of the new birth (chap. 3), the living water (chap. 4), the cleansing water of Bethesda (chap. 5) and the calming of the waters (chap. 6). All of these have revealed Jesus as the agent of God who brings God’s gracious offer of life.”
God is offering us life, through Jesus, who gives His Spirit. Today, I am humbled and grateful for the Living Water who has come to fill every person who comes to Him.
