Why I Don’t Do Urgent

A lot of NP leaders come to me when donations are lagging and their donor comm teams are frazzled. There’s an urgency to see giving grow STAT.

I get it. But the best thing I can do is stick by the primary guiding principle I’ve adopted for my consultancy:

“I don’t do urgent.”

It’s not that I don’t want to see quick results for my clients. It’s not that I don’t sense the urgency for their org. It’s not that I won’t work quickly or meet tight deadlines.

Urgent is a way of working that’s rooted in scarcity and fear. It puts everyone on edge and doesn’t lead to long-term stability. (And when I’ve hopped on the urgent train just to please clients? Total train wreck.)

Change takes time. NP teams often need to STOP doing some of the things that are making them frazzled. (Things that aren’t working anyway.) And they need to START doing some things that more effectively engage donors and invite them to partner in the work.

All that takes time to assess and implement and practice. There are no quick fixes for problems that have been building up.

The best way forward is committing to true change of mindset, approach, and priorities.
